Steve Martin The price of a coffee (US) $2.90...

A Kilo of Coffee makes 80 cups...

The gross income from that Kilo of coffe is $232

If Starbucks bought 175 million kilos of coffee last year at $3.28 / kilo that cost them $574 million

The net income from that coffe would be $40600 million

The suppliers of their coffee live in abject pove...rty... Their idea of 'prosperity' if simply having somewhere to live, food and medical care, and the ability to send their children to school.

Instead they struggly to make enough money to live at the most basic level. Ethepoian coffee producing areas are suffering famine - not because of drought, but ecconomic famine because they can't afford the most basic food and are reliant on international aid to survive.

Coffee is the second highest traded comodity in the world after oil but while oil producing nations grow rich, coffe producing nations are seeing a 30 year low in the price they get for their product, while the clobal coffe market has grown from $30 billion to over $80 billion in recent years.

Kraft, Nestle, Proctor & Gambol, Sarah Lee and Starbucks could change this situation; a tenfold increase in the buying price of coffee would eradicate poverty across huge swaths of Africa and South America almost overnight.

As you can see form the figures above, this hardly make a dent in their imense profits by the producers standards, just redress the balance a little...

These purchasing figures are from Starbucks themselves, however, this is an average and is seriously disputed by many authorities as a highly manipulated statistic..

The truth is that much of their coffee is purchased directly from farmers by intermediate buying companies at below market rates of well under $1 Kilo, (as low as 10-30c / kilo). By the time that coffee retails it's value has often increased a thousand fold.

Donovan Eggnog Lattés are tasty! But steaming them is so noisy. Try calling out a "take away, grande decaf almond soy wet latte" while you've got the eggnog steaming! haha.

Hi Xavier, thanks for your post again. The best place to find out how we source coffee, work to protect the environment and support communities is www.StarbucksSharedPlanet.com

As I said before, we do share your concern for the quality of water and the health of the environment and people in Guatemala, and all countries where we purchase coffee.

That's why we developed our extensive coffee production guidelines in 2001. These specifically require the reduction of chemicals and synthetic inputs, and contain rigorous standards for water treatment and management in the coffee growing and processing. You can learn all about these at http://cafepractices.scscertified.com... See More

If you're got more detailed questions, I'd be happy to find out the answers. Just drop an email to UKMarketing@starbucks.com
