The arts have run out of dangerous ideas - all the taboos have been broken, and there is nothing shocking left to say. Nothing visionary, or even important. Does anyone still think you can change society with better architecture?

The ABC's Stephen Crittenden hosts a discussion between sociology professor and author of H...umanism: the Wreck of Western Culture John Carroll; The Chaser's Julian Morrow; and The Age columnist Catherine Deveny.

The arts are sometimes described as a safe place to raise dangerous issues, but are they really nothing more than a harmless consolation for the middle class? And if the Arts are supposed to be challenging, who and what are they challenging?

Perhaps the arts are no more a civilising influence than sausages.
