Hi all,
I was wondering what you all feed your parrots - especially African Greys - how much you feed, do they eat it all or nibble and chuck it out? I have lots of books on the subject and Im very confused! lol

I have a Yellow Thighed Caique and an Orange Winged Amazon and to say thieir eating habits are different is an under statement. The Caique eats constantly and will eat just about anything that is put in here feed. The Amazon is a bit more fussy with what she eats but we are slowly introducing her to more food.I too was a bit confused as to what to feed my parrots having read so many things in books and online.I have come to the conclusion that they, like humans, are happy with a varied diet.

I have an Orange winged Amazon parrot and he eats Xtravital complete mix and a mixture of fruit and veg, and a bit of whatever we are eating (as long as its healthy). He is a really good eater...variety is definitely the way to go.
You could try 2 separate bowls; one for fruit/veg and the other for a seed/complete mix. Sometimes cutting the fruit/veg up smaller helps stop parrots throwing the food out. Instead of only putting one or two types of fruit and veg in put small amounts of lots of different types in.

I have a brown headed parrot which are in the same family as Senegals. They are found in the wild in the same area as African greys
she was weaned onto a mixed seed diet with fruits and veggies. but i noticed she would mostly just pick out the sun-flower seeds and leave the rest. The a seed diet is they will only eat what they want too which isnt allways the good stuff. Sun-flower seeds are very high in fat but parrots love them, my avian vet told me many parrots on seed diets are obese because of this.
Shes now on Harrisons High potency organic pellets. With fruits and veggies every day and doing very well with it :)
The pellets have got all the good stuff in that parrots need. Parrots don't cope well with pesticides, herbicides and preservatives that are be found in other diets and can build up in thier bodies over time. I was worried that she would get bored with pellets as they arent colourfull and they are all the same size and look very boring ect. Thats why i think its still important to offer a variety of different fruit and veg. As everyone else has said variety is the key :)
She has taken to them very well to it and is very happy and healthy.
