Praise be to Allah Who honored His pledge and granted victory to His servant and exalted His army and lonely defeated all armed confederates. Peace be on the leader of Mujahideen and chief of the Messengers, owner of lofty behavior, our master and prophet, Mohammad and on his descendants and all his companions.
The Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran:
(Such (is his state): and whoever holds in honor the Rites of Allah, (in the sacrifice of animals)
Such (honor) should come truly from Piety of heart.
In them, ye have benefits for a term appointed:
In the end, their place of sacrifice is near the Ancient House.” S. 22:32-33
I extend my heartfelt felicitation:
- -To all Mujahid people of Afghanistan,
- To the esteemed families of martyrs and prisoners who have been imprisoned by the enemy,
- To the gallant Mujhideen,
-And to all believing masses of the Islamic Ummah on the occasion of this Eidul Odha.
I pray to Allah (SwT) to always bestow on this Ummah, the blessing of celebration of Eid ul Odha while they are dignified and having independence and grant them happiness, prosperity and success in these blessed days. Likely, I pray to Allah (SwT) to accept the pilgrimage of the pilgrims and accept in His Sight their worship and prayers. I also pray to Him to make this congregation (of Muslims), a factor for the unity of the whole Ummah.
While extending to you my felicitation on the eve of Eid ul Odha, I want to touch on some essential issues as regards the current situation:
1. To The Mujahid Nation:
I thank my Muslim people for their positive response to the Call of the Islamic Emirate ( of Afghanistan) and for their foiling the American melodrama by avoiding participation in the American process under the name of elections. I firmly believe, if the Mujahid people remain constant in their multi-sided and honest help (with Mujahideen), the Almighty Allah will expose and thwart all conspiracies of the enemy one after another. It is due to your selfless sacrifices that the arrogant enemy is facing both defeat, jittery and disgrace. I hope you will continue your legitimate Jihad and struggle in the way of realizing your Islamic aspirations; help the sacrificing Mujahideen of the path of freedom and strengthen their ranks with your persons and wealth, particularly, show your protection and empathy with the blessed families of the martyrs and prisoners on the basis of your Islamic responsibility and break off all relations with the stooge Kabul Administration.
Those who have occupied our country and taken our people as hostage, want to use the stratagem of negotiation like they used the drama of elections for some time in order to achieve their colonialist objectives. The invaders do not want negotiation aimed at granting independence to Afghanistan and ending their invasion but they want negotiation which will prolong their evil process of colonization and occupation. However, the people of Afghanistan will not agree to negotiation which prolongs and legitimatizes the invaders military presence in our beloved country. Afghanistan is our home. No one will ever be ready to negotiate with any one else about ownership of one’s home --still more to give share in administration and control of the home and himself ends up becoming homeless, powerless and servant in his own home.
The foreigners have occupied the land of the Afghans by dent of (military) might and savagery. If they want solution of the issue, they should put an end to the occupation of Afghanistan. The invading Americans want Mujahideen to surrender under the pretext of the negotiation. This is some thing impossible. Otherwise, we have noble principles and vast experiences for solution of our internal differences and commencement of good conduct with the people of the world. Therefore, the stand of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as regards the negotiation emanates from our Islamic and national interests and is based on strong grounds.
2.To the Gallant and Honor-loving Mujahideen of the Front lines!
Your victory over the invading disbelievers is the result of the Divine help. If you seek His pleasure, as a gratitude to the blessing of Allah (SwT), and make the service of common people your objective, Allah ( Swt) will bestow on you His ever growing blessing. The enemy will lose their hearts and you will have the honor to defeat the greatest colonialist power of this century. The signs ( of this victory) have been appearing, if God willing.
Implement the injunctions of Allah practically and fully; constantly strive for unity among your ranks and keep away from discord and friction. Obey your chiefs in all affairs of Jihad; pay heed to the protection of public and national properties during the conduct of military operations, particularly during martyrdom-seeking operations, focus on the invaders and their lackeys and other important targets. It is the Islamic responsibility of every believing man to avoid causing casualty to common people. There is no justification in Sharia for murder and injury of common people, nor is there any room for such deed in our sacred religion.
The cunning enemy wants to attack people’s congestion places like religious centers, mosques and other similar places in order to malign Mujahideen. They also launch sanguinary attacks under the name of martyrdom-seeking operations to mar the good name of Mujahiden. The Mujahideen should be on guard against these activities of the enemy and fully avoid from carrying out any analogous activity. Well-being and prosperity of people should make your priority. Pay respect to elders and influential among the people and have compassion over the youngsters. Observe true justice when you are authorized to dispense to a deserving person his due right. Implement the Regulation of the Code of Conduct of the Islamic Emirate and observe other principles in order to ensure achievement of ever-increasing advancement in the affairs of Jihad. Make the most of experience, consultation and proven tactics in the military operations and other affairs of Jihad so that you will block the door of differences, complaints and losses. Similarly, take every precaution for the protection of your persons and make efforts in this way. Take care of the rights of those who surrender to you from the enemy side. This process ( of surrendering to Mujhideen) is now continuing.
The ( former) communists formed tribal and unscrupulous groups under the name of tribal militia at a time when they were on the verge of defeat. The aim was to provoke internal conflicts, biases, racial differences and resultantly revenge themselves on (our) Mujahid people. The Americans and their allies too want to repeat the same failed experience. I am of the opinion that the recent efforts launched by the enemy will further malign it and will meet its defeat but you should make every effort to foil this last conspiracy of the enemy with the help of your Mujahid people. Mete out an exemplary punishment to those who are leading these mischief-making activities so that the dark and notorious history of the barbaric militias does not recur anew.
3. To the Ruler’s and Employees of the Puppet Administration of Kabul:
Stop oppressing and torturing your miserable Muslim people as a sign of your service and slavery to the non-believing invaders. The foreign invaders are not benefactors of the Afghan people. They are bent on wiping out the belief and holy places of this people and want to bring under their belly all our material wealth. They use the empty slogans of development and reconstruction of Afghanistan for realization of their illegitimate objectives. They have stashed away thousands of millions of dollars in their pockets which they had collected in the name of reconstruction of Afghanistan.
They want to keep our country entangled in a net of usury and interest according to a calculated conspiracy and are determined to subjugate our distinguished people.
I call on you all as I did last time and as per my responsibility, to put an end to your life of humiliation; shun hostility with your people and join the Mujahideen in the strongholds of pride, honor and belief instead of continuing with your present life of debasement. The enemy want to lay his gun over your shoulder and kill your countrymen but you should try, and by utilizing a proper opportunity, should rescue yourself from the fate of the pro-Britain Shah Shuja, pro-Russian Taraki, Amin , Karmal, Najib and their followers. If you honestly part ways with the evil, you will have success in this world and in the world to come.
You should understand that the epoch of dread of the Western colonialism has reached its end. Ground realities in our beloved country indicate that the invaders are about to escape. The caravan of truth is steadily approaching its rationale destination of victory. Mujahideen gain strength with the passage of time as they obtain good experience in political, media, and social fields. The invaders and their stooges’ moribund efforts are tantamount to erecting a mound of sand in front of the turbulent river of the Jihadic movement. These waves of resistance which have been originated from the midst of the honor-loving nation will wash away the torsos of the arrogant invaders, if God willing.
4.To Islamic Conference and the So-called Human Rights Organizations:
I call on the Islamic Conference and all organizations that have been established under the name of human rights protection to take steps for the prevention of civilian casualties caused by the invading forces of America and the coalition and should raise voice for the punishment of the perpetrators of this crime. Similarly, the invading forces under the leadership of America and the surrogate regime of Kabul have erected prisons under different names in all parts of the country in contravention to international principles. A great number of our miserable and innocent countrymen are brutally tortured there. All human rights organizations who claim being advocates of human rights should promptly and as per their responsibility, take steps to prevent occurrence of such brutal acts. Many of our prisoners have been martyred and maimed as a result of harsh conduct and torture in these prisons. If the human rights organizations are not willing to fulfill their responsibility in order to please America and the West, then they should renounce their title of human rights advocacy as a matter of moral obligation.
5. To Scholars, Writers and Men of Letters.
I urge independent scholars, teachers and statesmen to raise the legitimate cause of their miserable people in every hearing and forum and support it. Inform the countrymen and public of the world about the ground realities in Afghanistan through your write-ups and speeches. By waging a Jihad of words and pen, render thanks for the gift of talents bestowed on you by God. I call on all distinguished writers and journalists to play their due role in this critical juncture of our history when our land is under the blatant aggression. They should struggle in the field of media for the obtainment of independence of our Islamic country and a true Islamic system and, as per their responsibility, portray the impeachable facts so that they reach the ears of the public. With the power of belief and an unflinching ardor, make struggle to tell and unveil the truth.
I also urge the committed and sensible poets to preserve the Jihadic epics and acts of heroism of Mujahideen in their poems and literary pieces and generate emotions for independence, honor , national unity and Islamic resurgence. Not only that but further bolster them.
6. To Regional and Neighboring Countries:
Colonialist plans of expansionism of the West are in full swing in the region. The economic assistance, the mercenaries, the overt and covert ploys of the wicked companies have paved the way for( execution of these plans) and have set off hatred, discrimination and rivalries in the region.
In fact, this is an act against the humane values, justice, peace, rules of interstate relations and independence. If the regional countries still remain neutral versus the colonialist interventions of America and the vast military presence, the whole regional will be gripped by instability; the process of development will hamper and ultimately( the region) will become powerless.
We emphatically say that the strong determination and unwavering resistance ( of Mujahideen ) has eroded the capability of the enemy; has wiped out ( their) shock and awe era and frustrated their wicked plans. Therefore, as a sign of gratitude for the sacrifices offered by our oppressed people, you should assist us in the cause of freedom of our country. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants to take constructive measure together with all countries for mutual cooperation, economic development and good future on the basis of mutual respect.
We consider the whole region as a common home against colonialism and, as a responsible force, want to play our role in stability and peace of the region in future.
7. To the Rulers of the White House and the Belligerent Americans:
The ground realities in Afghanistan indicate, the Americans and other allied invaders will certainly face a route --this is a defeat which can’t be averted by reinforcement and formulation of successive irrational strategies. You should understand that coercion and militarism has lost its splendor. You will not be able to subjugate the brave Afghan people with the power of your military might or the mantra of your devilish ploys.
The people, whom you have chosen for confrontation, have the honor of dismantling the arrogant empires. They have good capability and historical experience. Our believing people will not allow the Western colonialism to make our country a hotbed against our independence and vital values and aggressive designs against regional countries. These are the people who before you, have wiped out two empires – the British and Russians empires-- from the map of the world. They are holding the stronghold of honor and Jihad with strong determination and high morale against the demoralized and moribund troops. And on the basis of their belief, they are sure that they will gain victory and you will face defeat.
It is better for you to choose the path of rationale instead of militarism and put an end to the occupation of Afghanistan. You should understand your belligerent and aggressive policy will create for you so many enemies in the world which would make for you this world a bed of thorns. It will make your life harsh because the policy of coercion and tyranny is intolerable to all.
8. To the Public of Europe Particularly To the Freedom-loving People of the West:
Your colonialist rulers have invaded our country under the pretext of terrorism to augment the wealth of a few capitalists and spread the net of neo-colonialism over our country.
Every day, our youths, old men, women and children are martyred by your bombs and rounds of mortars. The invaders raid houses of our people at night. They destroy our green gardens, public properties, educational and commercial centers.
Countering this atrocity and aggression and the defense against it, is our legitimate and national right. We will use this right of ours with all our resources and sacrifices.
You should not fall prey to the misleading assertions of your colonialist rulers as they call this war, a war of necessity. This is a farce weapon in the hands of your rulers under the colonialist pretext of fight against terrorism. Thus they want to throw dust into the eyes of people. It is the demand of your conscience and moral duty to raise your voice for the prevention of this savagery.
We only want establishment of an Islamic system in our country which will protect rights of all individuals of this nation both men and women—a system depending on its own feet, fully independent, its internal and external policy being based on this Islamic principle: not harming others and not allowing others to harm us.
Fight against terrorism is an unjustified colonialist term fabricated by Pentagon and Washington. They want to colonize independent countries by using this proposition and bring under their belly natural riches and economic resources of these countries and trample on belief and religious traditions of these countries.
9. To the Islamic Ummah:
I remind Muslim brothers in every part of the world, of the words of Hazarat Omar Farouq (May Allah be pleased with him), the Great Caliph of Islam who said: “We are people whom Allah exalted by Islam. If we still seek exaltation in things other than Islam, Allah will humiliate us.”
I advise you to fully abide by the sacred rules of Islam in order to achieve the magnanimity and grandeur of Islam. Help (your) oppressed Muslim brothers and use your wisdom, sagacity and sobriety in the cause of Jihad and confrontation with the tyrant aggressors, particularly, the chiefs of the Jihadic movements should ponder over all aspects during performance of affairs of Jihad; avoid disunity and splintering among your ranks and be heedful to the conspiracies being engineered to malign Mujahideen.
Avoid from deeds that cause great losses to Islam and Muslims instead of bringing in benefits to the Muslims. Focus your efforts on beating the invading, usurping enemy; do not engage in purposeless activities, rather turn your attention to the main objective.
All Muslims should remember in their prayers, the Muahideen-- the protectors of Islam and Islamic Ummah-- and extend them moral and Islamic support and should defend their cause as a legitimate Islamic cause. The Americans and its allies have been hammering out plans overtly and covertly to destabilize the Islamic world and provoke differences in the Islamic countries. Every Muslim should realize his/her arch enemy and be on guard against the conspiracies of the enemies.
To end, I remind all my Muslim brothers of this Divine verse (bearing) good news ( of victory):
“Or do ye think that ye shall enter the Garden (of Bliss)
Without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you?
They encountered suffering and adversity,
And were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger
And those of faith who were with him Cried:
“When (will come) the help of Allah”
Ah! Verily, the help of Allah is (always) near!”
Al-baqara: V.124.
Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid
The Servant of Islam
(1) We celebrate the ritual of our father Ibrahim (as) Hence Allah commanded him to offer his only son as a human sacrifice. His son Ismael said: Do what Allah has commanded you my beloved father and you shall find me insha allah among the patient ones. Surah 37:102
Ibrahim obeyed the commandment of his Lord, thus he passed the test Allah set for him. However Allah provided a lamb instead for him to offer as a sacrifice. Human sacrifice is not allowed in Islam, and only people who indulge in black magic offer human sacrifice to iblis their god that they worship instead of Allah. Every year pious and devout Muslims offer sacrifices in the form of sheep, goats, cows and camels. This is to commemorate the sacrifice of Ibrahim (as) These Muslims offer these sacrifices from their halal earnings to thank Allah to bless them with wealth so as to make these sacrifices. They offer these sacrifices every year to obey the commandment of Allah to make this sacrifice. This sacrifice should be done by all Muslims who can afford it. Seven Muslims can share in the sacrifice of a cow/camel but only one person should pay for the sacrifice of a sheep/goat. It is permissible to pay a Muslim butcher to do the sacrifice on your behalf and you collect the meat and share it with your family, friends and the poor & needy. The animal which is sacrificed should not be too young and it must be sound and without blemish. The word Eid is from the arabic word aada which means to keep coming back again & again. Hence Eid is a celebration which keeps coming back every year.
To give Eid cards to your nearest & dearest is not a bid'ah because the occasion is halal and an emblem of Islam. However birthday cards are not of Islam. To give a Christmas card to a kafir is an act of apostasy because you would be agreeing with the creed of the kuffaar that Allah begot a son who was born on the 25th of december.
On this day of Eid one should take a bath and wear their most beautiful clothing and perfume. Women may wear perfume which is not overpowering. Muslims are allowed to play the duff/drums and sing songs on Eid, weddings and jihad. I don't have any evidence to prove that it is haram for Muslim women to be by themselves and dance to nasheeds on Eid day. The Holy Prophet said to Abu Bakr when he wanted to stop the girls from beating drums and singing in the home of Aisha; "O Abu Bakr for every people there is a day of celebration for them to enjoy and Eid is our day of celebration to enjoy"
As for the Muslims who are on Hajj they do certain rituals that reminds them of our unique and divine Islamic history. The stoning of the jamrak on three occasions is to remind us of how Prophet Ibrahim stoned Iblis 3 times when he appeared in the form of an old lady crying and begging him to disobey Allah and not to offer his son Ismael as a sacrifice. When we stone the jamrak it is suppose to remind us that life is all about resisting the temptations of Iblis and remain steadfast on our deen so as to enter the Paradise in the Hereafter.
When we run between the 2 hills of Safa & Marwa it is suppose to remind us that Hajar (ra) did not give up from Allah's mercy. When her son Ismael was crying for water due to severe thirst she kept running looking for water and she didn't give up from Allah's mercy. Its not befitting of a Muslim to give up from Allah's mercy and despair. Hence Prophet Jacob (as) said to his sons: "Go back to Egypt and enquire about my 2 other sons Yusuf and Ben Yamin and do not despair of Allah's mercy, because no one gives up from Allah's mercy and despairs except the kafiroon." Surah 12:87
Hajar (ra) did not despair of Allah's mercy so she kept running and searching for water when she heard the crying of her baby Ismael. Her tawakkul ( trust in Allah) paid off because the angel Jibreel came and used his wing and struck the ground and the well of Zam zam sprung forth. This water is a holy water and it can be used to cure ailments if the person who is using it has strong iman. because the Holy Prophet said: " Zam zam is what you drink it for" Hence a person with an ailment can use Zam zam as his remedy.
On this joyous occasion my beloved brothers and sisters in Islam as you celebrate eid with your nearest & dearest with delicious food & drinks and beautiful clothing, you must not forget the plight of your brothers and sisters in Kashmir. They are been oppressed by Hindu cow worshippers. You must not forget the plight of the Muslims of Iraq. They are been invaded and killed by the knights Templers. We must not forget the plight of the Muslims in occupied Palestine. They are occupied and killed everyday by the Zionists. We must not forget the plight of the Muslims who are kept in Guantanamo Bay for 8 yrs by the knights Templers without charge been charged. Also we must not forget the plight of the Muslims in Pakistan who are killed everyday by a pagan Berailwi regime who hates Muslims with a passion. The apostate regimes in the Ummah to have given their walaa ( allegiance) to the Zionists, Crusaders and Templers to crush Islam and Muslims. These regimes are in the Arabian gulf, North Africa and also Pakistan. They have taken a stance against Islam and Muslims and have given their walaa to the Crusaders and the knights Templers. May Allah destroy all these apostate regimes.
Today on Eid day brothers & sisters in Islam, you should get rid of all your grudges and make peace. Its not allowed to carry grudges for more than 3 days and the better Muslim of the 2 is the one who gives the salam first. The Holy Prophet (saw) said: " If you carry grudges for your Muslim brother for a whole year it is as if you killed him" Let this joyous day of Eid be the day you get rid of all your grudges.
I pray to Allah to give us the iman to remain steadfast on our deen without having any relapse. O Allah bless the Ummah of Muhammad and unite us on all fronts. O Allah bless the Mujahideen in all parts of the world. O Allah bless our Muslim youths and keep them safe from sins. O Allah disgrace and destroy every apostate regime in all parts of the world. O Allah increase the Muslims in taqwa, in health and in wealth. O Allah unite our hearts so that we can defeat your enemies and our enemies.
With the approach of 'Id al-Adha, it is this time of year that we often evoke the memory of an incident that is central to the concept of this holiday, and that is the incident of Prophet Abraham nearly slaughtering his son, Ismael. I would like to focus on this event from a particular point of view.
When a person is thrust into trials and tests, he is often reassured by others and comforted by reminders of the rewards that await him in the Hereafter as the result of his patience and forbearing. However, while the rewards of Paradise and its delights are certainly superior and best, our expectations and hopes should also be focused on a reward and relief in this world as well. In other words, while we look forward to long-term recompense for our struggles, we also have immediate and short-term rewards awaiting us in this world—fruits of our patience and forbearing that we will see before our very eyes in the near future.
For example, in Surat Yunus, v. 103: {“Then, We save our messengers and those who believe! In this way, it is a must upon Me to save the believers.”}
Also, in Surat al-Hajj; v.15:
{Whoever thinks that Allah will not help him (i.e. Prophet Muhammad and his followers) in this world and the next, let him stretch out a rope to the ceiling and strangle himself.”}
In v.38 of the same chapter:
{Indeed, Allah defends those who believe…”}
Also in Surat an-Nur; v. 55:
{Allah has promised those of you who believe and do good deeds that He will give them authority on Earth as He did to those before them, and He will grant them the authority to practice their religion that He chose for them, and He will exchange their fear for safety…”}
And in Surat at-talaq; v. 2:
{“…and whoever has taqwa of Allah, He will make a way out for him.”}
When we look at the story of Abraham and his son, as well as many other examples that fill the Qur’an, we see this worldly reward and relief always coming as part of this combination:
-A test, whether that be in one’s health, wealth, children, or freedom
-The test met with the attitude of a true believer
-Relief soon after in this world
In Surat as-Saffat; v. 103, we see that Prophet Abraham took the only son he had, Ismael, and prepared to slaughter him in accordance with what he saw in a dream. What test is graver and more tortuous upon the soul than to be the one to put a knife to your own son’s neck? As anyone with children knows, the life of a child is more valuable in the life of its parent than the parent’s own life, without any doubt. So, to come away with the realization that you are being commanded to not only allow your son to die, but that you will be the one to kill him is so unimaginable that it makes Ismael’s response to his father all the more bewildering: {“…O father, do what you’re commanded. You’ll find me from the patient, if Allah wills.”} Here, we have the second part of the combination: the attitude of a true believer. Go ahead. If this is Allah’s command, kill me. Let me lose my health. Let me lose my wealth. Put me in prison. Deprive me of everything. You will find me to be of the patient, no problem, as it says in the next verse: {“Then, when they had both submitted…”} as he lay Ismael down on his forehead, ready to slice through his neck.
Suddenly, Allah called out to Abraham: {“You have fulfilled what was in the dream!”} That’s it. You passed the test. The most difficult and horrible thing any father could be asked to do, and you were ready without hesitation to do it, and you and your son faced this with the attitude of true believers. You passed. The next few verses go on to list just a few of the rewards Abraham got in this life as the result of this spending performance: good remembrance with later generations, glad tidings of his next son Isaac, a greeting of Peace from Allah, all in addition to the large ram that Allah replaced with on the altar for Abraham to slaughter. As Allah said in v. 110: {“This is how We reward the good-doers.”} The third part of the combination. And we obviously know of his status in the Hereafter in addition to all of this.
Let’s go back towards the beginning of the Qur’an for another example. In Surat al-Baqarah; v. 249, we see Prophet Samuel sending King Saul (Talut) to lead an army against Goliath. However, there is a test that takes place along the way to weed out the weaklings: {“Verily, Allah will test you with a river. So, whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever refrains from tasting from it is of me, unless it’s a scoop in his palm.”} This was going to show who was deserving of the reward in this world that is mentioned a few verses later. If they co uldn’t even pass the test of being thirsty while crossing a river, then it could not be said that they were displaying the attitude of a true believer They failed the test: {“…Yet, all but a few of them drank from it…”} We often think we’re something, that we’re so high in the sky when it comes to our practice of Islam. However, as soon as a forced hardship strikes—don’t drink from the river, or you didn’t get that job, or your marriage plans didn’t work out, or your child is stricken with a disease—your reality is shown. You give in. Your paper house collapses. You bend down and drink from the river. Your strength was imaginary. You have failed the test, like a glass of coke that fizzes to the point of nothingness.
This was the majority. However, there were a small group who stayed the course, kept their heads up and their hearts strong. They saw Goliath’s group. They panicked. Only natural. However, the real stars of the show shone brightly: {“But those who knew with certainty that they were going to meet Allah said: ‘How often it is that a small group overcomes a large group by Allah’s leave!’.”} Here we have it: a true believer’s attitude in the face of seemingly impossible odds and torturous conditions. Confidence. Certainty. Calmness. They march forward toward Goliath’s forces, as true believers, paying no mind to Goliath’s threats, his power, his authority, his attempted intimidation. All they can think about at this moment is that Goliath’s very ability to breathe, the ability of his heart to beat, the ability of his blood to even continue flowing through his veins, is all being controlled by one entity; the very entity they are now calling upon, saying nothing more than the following simple yet powerful and comprehensive words: {“Our Lord! Pour patient on us, make our feet firm, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”} Once again, the test of facing a much more powerful opponent, the impossible odds, the almost certain defeat, all being met with beautiful confidence, faith, and trust in Allah. In accordance with the aforementioned formula, this beautiful attitude and performance was met with an immediate reward and relief in this world, before their very eyes: {“So, they defeated them with Allah’s permission, and David killed Goliath. And Allah gave him the kingdom, the wisdom, and taught him what He willed…”} Just like that.
I want you to notice that they did experience hardship along the way—most of the army of Saul failed the test—but this didn’t detract from the sweet victory they achieved against Goliath in the end.
Let’s now look at the v.146 of Surat Al ‘Imran: {“How many Prophets had religious scholars fight alongside them in large numbers! But , they never lost heart due to what befell them for the sake of Allah, and they didn’t lower or degrade themselves. And Allah loves the patient.”} Here, we have a description of people suffering some type of harm for the sake of Allah. We also have a description of how they faced that harm: by never displaying weakness. In other words, they stayed strong. They stayed confident. They never lost hope or patience or confidence, even though they had already been harmed! Let’s continue: {“And all they said was: “Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and transgressions, keep our feet firm, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”} Once again, a beautiful performance and display of a true believer’s attitude: strength, confidence, and total and complete turning to Allah in the face of what harm they were experiencing at the hands of their opponents. In accordance with the aforementioned combination, the next verse tells us what they received in response to their attitude: {“So, Allah gave them the reward of this world and the best reward of the Hereafter…”}
In v.173 of the same chapter, we see an example following the Battle of Uhud, and the defeat experienced therein. The Prophet had gathered the wounded Muslims and led them out to Hamra’ al-Asad to (!) chase after the army that had just defeated them. Abu Sufyan responded by gathering as many fighters as he could to face this small wounded group that could barely walk. Onlookers, hypocrites, told the Prophet: {“Indeed, the people have gathered a huge army against you. So, fear them!”} Imagine the scene: a defeated group of injured facing an even larger army than the one that just defeated them! Fear is a natural reaction. In fact, one’s faith might be shaken in the face of such impossible odds. However, {“…It only increased them in faith, and they said: ‘Allah is enough for us, and He is the best Disposer of our affairs’.”} There it is again! The attitude. The strength. The confidence. The total reliance on Allah and lack of intimidation by Abu Sufyan and his resources. The amazing and unnatural INCREASE in faith! Another beautiful performance and display. The result? {“So, they returned with grace and bounty from Allah, and they were not touched by harm…”} Abu Sufyan was a no-show, despite the impression that was given of him and the army he was gathering. One minute, the Prophet and his injured, handicapped comrades are facing impossible odds, and the next minute: they were not even touched by a bit of harm. A reward and relief in this world, before their very eyes, simply on account of the attitude they presented in the face of this test of faith. Hopefully, a pattern is detectable here.
Go now to Surat Yusuf; v. 50. Prophet Joseph had spent years in prison after being falsely accused of trying to seduce the king’s wife. When the king finally called for Joseph to meet him, Joseph first demanded that his name be cleared: {“Return to your master and ask him “what happened to the women who cut their hand?’”} Imagine, this messenger is coming to bring Joseph out of prison, and Joseph is so calm and tranquil and confident after having passed the test with the King’s wife that he wasn’t in such a rush to leave prison until his name was absolutely cleared. As al-Bukhari reported in his ‘Sahih’, that the Prophet said: “I’m amazed at the patience of Joseph. If the caller had come to bring me out of that prison, I would’ve immediately responded and left.” Once again, a beautiful display in the face of the hardship of prison. What did he receive in return in this world, before his very eyes? The king said to Joseph upon meeting him: {“Indeed, you are today valued and trusted.”} and Prophet Joseph was then made the minister of finance over all of Egypt: {“This is how We gave full authority to Joseph in the land to establish himself there in when and where he pleased. We grant Our Mercy to whom We Will, and We don’t waste the reward of the good-doers.”}
Let’s revisit Abraham, this time in Surat al-Ambiya’; v.68. He had just finished smashing the idols worshipped by his community, and had made them very, very mad in doing so. They were so angry that they decided the only way to teach Abraham a lesson was to burn him alive: {“They said: ‘Burn him and come to the aid of your gods!’”} He was being burned alive for the sake of Allah, and rather than fretting, losing his mind, or even fearing the fire, his response was exactly what the Prophet Muhammad and his injured comrades replied thousands of years later at Hamra’ al-Asad: {“Allah is enough for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.”} What did he receive immediately before his very eyes in response to his attitude and faith in the face of such a grotesque treatment from his opponents? Allah said: {“O fire! Be cool and peaceful for Abraham!”} A result that the human mind cannot imagine: being thrown into a blazing fire, only to find the fire cool and peaceful. This is a real life reward Abraham obtained, simply on account of his attitude and confidence in Allah when tested: {“And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the losers.”} Yes. Allah goes on to list more rewards that Abraham received in this life resulting from this incident: he, along with Prophet Lot, were rescued from their oppressors and moved to the Holy Land, he was given Isaac and Jacob as righteous progeny, and they were not only righteous, but: {“We made them leaders, guiding by Our command.”} It might not seem like a big deal to us, but imagine for a second how good it would feel to have some of your descendents, including your sons and grandchildren, be Prophets of God! All of this was the fruit of Abraham’s faith and confidence in Allah that he so beautifully displayed when Allah put him to the test.
These examples may seem repetitive, but that is entirely the point. We have to take the Qur’an as a guidebook of how to deal with real life challenges, and these stories are being related to us by Allah for no other reason. While the scenarios faced by these Prophets are not those that we ourselves might face, the lesson, nonetheless, is the same.
The classic example of hardship and patience is that of Prophet Job (Ayyub). He was essentially tested in every aspect of his life possible: his health, wealth, family, standing in the community—he lost everything. Not one or two of these things—no, everything. Some narrations describe him as living in a garbage dump due to being expelled form his home and having none to tend to his many illnesses. In Surat al-Ambiya’; v.83, we see how he responded to this test: {“He cried out to his Lord: ‘Truly, distress has overtaken me, and You are the most Merciful.”} He kept his mind focused, despite the many catastrophes that had come to define his life, on the One who could remove it all in the blink of an eye. Really think about how patient he was—this is why culturally, we refer to somebody with much patience as having ‘the patience of Job.’ Yet, his attitude was such that his only reaction to all of this was to get even closer to Allah, and call upon him with humility. Du’a’ is not just an act of desperation; it is a way of life. It is an aspect of your character, of the personality and attitude of a true believer. It is your lifeline—what did he receive before his very eyes? {“So, We answered his call, and We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his family to him and their like along with them as a Mercy from Ourselves and a reminder for all those who worship Us.”} And what a useful reminded it is…
Next up is Prophet Jonah (Yunus). In Surat Al-Ambiya’; v.87, we witness his reaction to being swallowed whole by a whale! {“…he cried through the darkness: ‘There is none worthy of worship except You! Glory be to You! I was of the wrong doers!’”} So, his first inclination was to humble himself before the only One he knew could and would save him from the organic prison in which he now found himself. He would remind himself of Who had placed him in this prison. He would remind himself of the Glory of the One who had placed him there. He would admit his shortcomings in serving Him and carrying out what he was tasked with. He would surrender himself to Allah, thus displaying the reaction of a true believer and confident worshipper. The result? {“So, we answered his call, and delivered him from the distress. This is how We save the believers.”} That one moment of sincere supplication to Allah—in reality, a reflection of his overall personality—was all it took to get him out of the stomach of a whale! Not only was this his reward, but he became one of the few Prophets whose communities ended up believing in Allah on a large scale.
The next verse of the same chapter gives us yet another example, Prophet Zechariah, who was so old that he and his wife had lost hope in being able to have children. The test. This was his test, his deprivation. Now, what was his response and attitude? {“He cried: ‘O my Lord! Don’t leave me childless, though You are the best of inheritors.”} Once again, this du’a’ is much more than just a prayer. It is a reflection and indication of what this person’s heart was like. It was an indication of how he saw the world, and how he thought controlled it. {“So, We answered his calla nd bestowed on him John (Yahya), and allowed his wife to bear children for him.”} Why? What was the qualifying factor that led to such a wonderful and miraculous turn of events after a hopeless situation was looking them in the eye? The rest of the verse answers this for us, and it is quite simple: {“…Indeed, they used to hasten in good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before Us.”} That was it.
A few chapters down, in Surat ash-Shu’ara; v.53, we are with Prophet Moses on the night of his escape from the clutches of Pharaoh, with the Children of Israel in tow: {“Then, Pharaoh sent callers to the cities, saying: ‘Indeed, they are only a small gang, and they have indeed enraged us. But we are a powerfully assembled force who has had much time to prepare.”} So, here is Moses having stolen the slaves of none other than Pharaoh, now about to become his target of hunt, for which Pharaoh has gathered all the men and resource she can muster: {“So, they pursued them at sunrise. When the two groups saw each other, the companions of Moses said: ‘Indeed, we are definitely going to be overtaken.’”} Once again, the natural response of fear in the face of impossible odds. On one side, you have the Red Sea, and no boat to carry you across it with all who are with you. On the other side, to compound the problem, Pharaoh is now looking straight at you, obviously pleased that you have nowhere to run. And yes, you have nowhere to run. This is the tyrant who only the day before was threatening to crucify anyone who even believed in your message, and he was now coming straight at you as you were trapped. The next verse shows us the attitude of complete faith and pure reliance on Allah that emanated from Moses—the lack of fear in the face of impossible odds, in the face of a gut-wrenching scenario: {“He said: ‘Rather my Lord is with me, and He will guide me!”} Keep in mind that Moses had no idea what was to come! He had no indications as to how he and the Israelites were going to make it out of this trap! NO CLUE! All he knew was what he had just said: he had his Lord with him, and his Lord would take care of him. And he was absolutely right: {“Then We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your stick!’ And it split, with each part becoming like a huge mountain.”} Just close your eyes and imagine yourself there, one of those anxiously awaiting a way out of this trap! Suddenly, the sea splits in half, and you walk across it!? Yes. This was all the fruit of Prophet Moses’ faith and the response to his good expectation of Allah as illustrated in his own concise words: My Lord is with me, and He will guide me. {“And We saved Moses and those with him, then We drowned the others.”} End of story, with a real life reward and victory that appeared before their very eyes. And Pharaoh, the man who claimed to be Allah, was gone…
And the other examples in the Qur’an are many, and history repeats itself.
So, it is essential to expect reward and relief for firm faith in the midst of trails and tests in the short-term as well as the long-term (Paradise), and to remember that Allah is an actual Living, Hearing, Responding entity who reacts to what we say and do.
And Allah Knows best.
Eid Mubarak to everybody, thank you for reading this.
