Hi. I'm interested in having some laying hens in my backyard. I'm seeking advise on how to start without spending too much. My whole reason for wanting the laying hens is to save on purchase cost as well as being green. I love the idea of knowing where my food comes from. And my kids and I find them so addirable. This ...is also a great way to teach my kids ways to be self sufficient. All comments are welcome. I need the urban chicken 101 class. I'm calling out to all urban chicken fans to help me. Thanks in advance for taking the time to help our family.Read more

Cheryl Cohen

Cheryl Cohen I love my chickens SO much.. I'm starting a new company that will feature chicken inspired items. Everything from clothing, drinkware, car mats, blankets, cards, stickers even shower curtains. You will be able to use our designs or we can help you design your own coop logo and you can put it on everything! Would anyone be interested??

Steve Irish would love to make another hen house, and the next one will really be something.

Urban Chickens I so want to see this "chicken house of the future." What would your coop design include or omit? (Thanks to Mad City Chickens documentary for the link.)

Thanks, Judy... working on migrating the blog over to the new look, too. Oh, and there's a legal resource wiki about to launch as well so's to help folks know where urban chickens are legal and change the laws where they're not. Stay tuned!

Kay Kulbeck Kelly Our chickens recently started laying and we're wondering if we should wash the eggs before storing them or wash them before using them. Thanks, we're new to raising chickens.

Hi Kay, I brush off the dry eggs fresh from the nest and only wash them just before using them. Here's a link to a post on how to clean urban chicken eggs: http://www.urbanchickens.net/2008/06/how-to-clean-urban-chicken-eggs.html

Sarah Townsend

Sarah Townsend out on a walk today in my chicago neighborhood I came across a chicken in the park. I brought it home (I know, maybe not the best-thought-out move. I'm not really in a position to keep chickens in any case, just didn't feel I could leave it there) and now realize it may be ill-- what would you recommend I do?
